Won't that break in most situations? Specifically because it won't have spaces around it to differentiate it from the context:

I guess another possibility is to make an "nobreak" code syntax. And then one could: [nobreak] `in one line`.

If this is a common use case, then I'd lean towards the nobreak
syntax.

Well it can't be that uncommon, seeing as this is only the third quickbook doc I write and have a need for it.

This begs to ask the question: shouldn't the teletype
markup preserve spaces like pre? That is, shouldn't [^-f /Jambase/]
do the right thing already?

Perhaps... Still doesn't remove the desire for it outside of the teletype style.
