If it is not much trouble could you please elaborate for my system.

My system : UBUNTU dapper.
name : viki
domain: <i dont have one>

Now how do i edit slapd.conf to fit in?

I can only show you the direction to quickstart-guide and admin-guide
on openldap.org for configuration of slapd.conf

What you need to do in Luma, is to use simple_bind, provide a valid
dn (with write-permissions) - e.g. your rootdn from slapd.conf
with the password that goes with it. You can temporarely set rootpw
to 'secret' in slapd.conf for debugging purposes, and set it back
to a more secret and powerful string and hash it using slappasswd or
Luma's tool in the admin-plugin.

The Dapper-version is outdated, and released versions of Ubuntu - will
never get a new release (e.g. from 2.2 to 2.3 or even 2.4) - so I can
only try to make a fix to your current problem if its a problem with
Luma and make a patch-release for Dapper.

Could you please try 2.4pre2 from www.grotan.com/luma/build and see
if it works better for you? If so, there's propably a bug in 2.2 that
needs to be sorted out for the Dapper-version.
