We make extensive use of controllers in modules and have had very few
problems.  Tobi at shopify makes extensive use too.  We've had no
trouble and I'm not sure what you're basing your opinion on.

Greg's situation is complicated by the use of engines,  perhaps ask on
their mailing list.  Can you reproduce it without engines Greg?
