Some ftp severs could generate this kind of thing on the fly, if my
memory serves me correctly.  The other thing is that the zip module
is included in the Windows dowload for Ruby, so would it be possible
to roll a ruby program to gunzip the files?  I've not got as far as
attempting to document zip yet, (I've had problems with my release of
rdoc when trying to test out my attempts to doc MD5, so I've not
explored the zip module and don't know how to use it myself).

Is the pressure available disk space, up/dowload times, or soemthing
else?  One of the nice things about ruby is its support of many
platforms, so excluding anyone seems to me to run counter to that.
