Jamis, thank you for taking the time to answer my post...

Looks like the error is the result of a stupid newbie trick; I was
running SSH on a non-standard port, so SSH connect was failing.  After
I went into my SSH config and added port 22 everything worked just
fine (on both Windows and Linux).
