I never used ps -axww - simply making the terminal window wider does
the same. That's why I blamed it to the RB shell class...

I doubt that Terminal is adding options on your behalf; rather, ps is clever enough to detect whether it's connected to a terminal, and if so, then adjust its default line length accordingly. But what you get with the Shell class is not a terminal, but just a shell. If you want to emulate a terminal, you can do so, but you'll need to dig into terminal emulation. It involves things like setting some environment variables and responding to certain escape sequences sent by the shell.
