Help with canvas to printer

I need some help understanding whats all involved taking an image from a 
canvas and printing it out. I have an image on a canvas and know I can't 
directly print it out without some magical passes to some different objects, 
but I need some help so I get started in the correct direction. Its either 
advanced or its a really stupid question...but at least a reply will let me 
know where I sit.

p.s. I have a simple example I can send to start with so we have a project I 
can learn from. Its very very simple...
