  As usual, debugging under Win95 is a pain. Given that the
only version of the executable causing the problem is a release build [1]
and GDB on Win95 being flaky [2], and considered the fact that there is a
workaround, I am currently abandoning investigation.

  Could you please post a bug report to the bug tracker? (just giving it
a significant title and pointing to the start of this thread in the archives
is enough)
