Thanks to everyone on this list for great and insightful answers.
As it turns out, the scanner can be reprogrammed to send any character
(or combination of characters) after the data. Which means that I can
go back to using EVT_TEXT.
I'm getting to appreciate Wx and WxPerl more and more every day, and
especially appreciate the suggestions that everyone gave me for moving
forward on the project.
