Yeah, I was thinking about this a moment longer after my earlier glib
reply and thought: if this is not documented *and* that is deliberate,
it would be nice if there were some documentation some place saying:
"The order of evaluation here is not documented explicitly because we
reserve the right to change it in future perls".  Without such a
document, the wretched perl programmer might be left forever unsure of
what's what in this regard.

(Of course I may have missed the official documentation of all this
somewhere, hence my original question.)
