This may just depend on the sort of things we each typically code for...
I end up with quite a lot of nested tables, with repeated information from
higher levels inside.  I could get by without the globals, but it'd mean
building bulkier loop-parameter arrays.

Some of that's probably due to my penchant for constructing URLs inside
the templates rather than in the code, of course.
