auto-initialize : might do
specify in perl code : i'd rather not. i'm trying to keep as much out  
of perl as necessary, esp default column values.  if they change, i  
dont want to update them in more than 1 place.
changes_only on save: i was actually hoping that existed already, as  
i saw it on insert.
