I doubt it's practical, but Google is using text-messaging to
cell-phones in addition to a CAPTCHA to limit signups to Gmail.
There's also the usual email-validation system where you have to click
a link in an email you recieve to validate your account. That's
certainly not difficult to automate but it does rule out the lowest
tier attackers.
