200!

But do you really need that many?

I have written a search engine for a university department/staff/phone
database whose main screen has 12 input fields and 2 submit buttons.

This only needed one (1) basic run mode.

Other run modes handle logging on, downloading search results, editing
data, etc.

The current plan is to simplify this by moving the editing into a
separate program.

If you think about it, you'll see the submit buttons, because they
return different values, are sub-modes of the 'current' mode.

IIRC this concept of viewing submit buttons as sub-modes is not
mentioned in any of the CIG:App docs I have read, but can be used if
appropriate.

I have no wish to start an argument about the exact definitions of run
mode and sub-mode.

I'm just suggesting you view your problem from a different angle, to
see if there is another way of structuring your solution.
