Hi Ovid,
We need what you describe, I really like the idea.
An alternative solution for now might be to stick the tar-ball in your
mini-cpan mirror if you have one.
The solution in the long run might be a setup similar to minicpan,
where you can point to a directory containing downloaded tar-balls.

Quite often I find myself in the position of having a tarball that I'd
like to install with CPAN.pm. There are two reasons I'd like to do
this:
* Let CPAN.pm find and install dependencies for me
* Take advantage of my highly customized CPAN installation
requirements
In other words, I'd like to do this:
$ perl -MCPAN -e shell
CPAN: File::HomeDir loaded ok (v0.65)
cpan shell -- CPAN exploration and modules installation (v1.9102)
ReadLine support enabled
cpan[1]> install ./Highly-Experimental-0.01.tgz
I've looked for a hack that would let me do this, but no luck. Is
there
a way to do this that I just haven't seen in the docs?
Cheers,
Ovid
