automake on Panther

I guess thos question is for moebius specially:
What does one need to do succesfully run automake for our projrct on 
MAcOS X/Panther?
Problem I ran into is that the bundled version of automakr is 1.6 !!

So maybe a short note on devlopment prerequsites on MacOS X would be 
nice in the CVS...
