Hi Walter,

You can get more info about what's happening in jython-dev list--if you want
more details, you can check jython-checkins. Otmar Humbel apparently is busy
with the installer these days, for example :)

I'm glad to hear your success with Jython. Would you think that you guys will
be able to help Jython in any way? Especially since you've used Jython quite
extensively.

Re your question about roadmap with Java 1.5 and 1.6--I think for 1.6 you're
thinking about javax.script? But 1.5, what is it? Seems that Jython source
compiles just fine with 1.5. I think I am using 2.2 alpha with 1.5 too.

I believe the leadership is with Frank now (Frank, correct me if i'm wrong).
About resources.... from what I see in jython-checkins, seems like there are 2
developers who are actively committing into Jython sourcetree: Frank and Otmar.

Cheers
Ray

Hi All,

We use jython 2.1 in one of our projects at work, and am looking at
migrating to jython 2.2. (we use it in a bpm-like context...and would
like to begin using generators)

However, it seems that the progress on that front is a bit
stagnant...there seems to be a lack of transparancy as to what are the
outstanding items to get there...

We have seen tremendous success and potential for usage of jython in
our group (a information systems integration group in a big financial
institiution) but the following items are making it difficult for us
to gain widespread use and adoption. (infact although jython 2.1
performed 10x better....we had to use beanshell -which has its own set
of problems- instead because people percieved jython as a product that
might not be useable after jdk 1.6)

Concerns:
- The psf proposal/grant that Brian had (and now Fank) been working on
is way behind schedule
- lack of clarity in regards to the resouces on this project (roles
and responsiblities)
- what is the roadmap of jython when factoring in jdk 1.5 and jdk 1.6
- what are the roadblocks getting us to 2.2 (and beyond)
- the "main" jython.org site is way way out of date
- the "perception" of lack of leadership
- jython resouces are plentiful (ibm development works, java
salon...etc) but not organized
- jython main site docs are useful...but not current

I don't know if many other people feel the same way but jython as a
project in general seems to be "lagging"

It would be great to clear the "project management" stuff up so that
we can see more "involvement"

We should try to get the people who already use jython involved (which
seems to be quite a few judging from the press we get from
developerWorks, java serverside.com, OReily) rather than making a new
spiffy website to drum up interest for "new" developers.

I don't think I can speak for the whole community, but speaking just
in regards to our group at work....we care more about:

- bugfixes
- project leadership (highlighing roadblocks and working with other
projects to resolve them)
- roadmap for java integration
- roadmap for integration with other pure python projects (like cherrypy...=
.)
- roadmap for python 2.X builtin module integration
- documentation update
- frequent releases

feel free to ping me...my email is chang dot walter at gmail dot com

Kind Regards,
Walter Chang
