Is this using JRuby .8.2? There's a lot of fixes and improvements in the Java integration layer (and just about everywhere else) that are not yet reflected in a release. More specifically, there was a recent massive fix to correct the way constants are looked up, which fixes the issue you're seeing here. We're targeting Monday to get a new release out, hopefully. Until then you might want to try running from current JRuby in CVS. Let me know if you need any help with that.
