I've tried that as well and it still comes up with an error!
  

I have also found that the fullclean doesn't get everything.  I've been using this to strip everything down to just the files that darcs knows about:

# darcs whatsnew -ls | grep '^a' | awk '{print $2}' | xargs rm -rf
