Is there any reason why we should have the #ifdef darwin here?

I failed to find any documentation that explicitly mentions the need to
zero the structure, but lots of sample code on the web that just does it
without any explanation. If an obligation to zero the structure is part of
the standard API but just not necessary on most platforms, we should do
it, I guess.

Well, sockets are really not my strong point.
