BTW These timings were for ghc 6.2.2

My version of ghc 6.3 (CVS from about a month or two ago) gave slightly
beter timings on both loop version.

My version of ghc 6.5 (CVS head from a week or two ago) gave much worse
timings on the first test and slightly better timings on the second test
(better than both 6.2.2 and 6.3)

I've not got the released 6.4 version on my machine yet.
