Haven't tried top, but I have tried strace, but have been unable to decipher
it. I'll have a go at collecting strace data and send it to you (if you're
interested), along with my build.mk. [ pause ] top reports ghc-asm to be
running when the machine hangs.

Now, this seems to a bad interaction between the EM (or some other part of
GHC, but the EM seems most likely) and this one computer, as it doesn't
happen on my laptop (also having run RedHat 8.0, now running RedHat 9.0).
I don't think it's bad memory or a bad disk, as I've not had any other
problems with the machine, post- RedHat installation (the RedHat installer
dies a few times before succeeding, but that's not so unusual), but I
haven't ruled that out (well, IBM's own diagnostic tool gives the drive the
thumbs up; haven't checked the memory, but a memory would seem to be more
likely to occur less repeatedly).

I'm keen to get to the bottom of this, because it will either exonerate GHC
(and lead me to buy a new harddrive or memory :-), or help us fix some
undesirable EM behavior.

Cheers,

Andy
