Hmm. I normally run bash, and my Terminal is also set to UTF-8. I just shelled into zsh, and it didn't make a difference.

Let's take this off-list for now. With your permission, I'll email a list of my Terminal preferences, as well as my environment vars. If we figure out what the difference is, I'll post the answer to the list for the sake of future reference.
