Thanks for your replies, guys.

Looks like I've found the reason. I used both xserver and nvidia drivers
from ppa repository
(http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu ) - actually i
hoped that my ATI will work better with them. I commented this
repository and installed xserver and nvidia driver from ubuntu
repositories. They looks much stable.

But now I'm not able to lock screen neither by Ctrl+Alt+L nor by right
click=>Lock Screen menu entry....

Jonas, I think you are right in that my fstab in Karmic messed up the /usr/bin/sudo as well as /etc/sudoers in Hardy. I have been trying to fix only the /usr/bin/sudo and have not tried fixing /etc/sudoers. Any thoughts on how to do that? In an attempt to not ask questions that I'm sure have been asked before, I went to the Kubuntu-users archive. I found no way of searching for a thread or subject in the archives. Is there a way of searching the archives? Monitor looks better now than I've ever seen > it, and that includes hardy, intrepid, and now jaunty. in Jaunty, I currently use the 180.44 drivers for my 9600 nVidia Gforce. It also works fine with my 8400 nVidia Gforce on board. Both are running great together. When I installed them, in "Hardware Drivers" it was recommended as the appropriate driver for my system. In application, it is the best video I have ever experienced, especially the 3D effects. This is probably not too helpful, but what Jaunty recommends has been the best for my system since Intrepid. More observations: when kde visual effects are disabled, i have 3.5FPS in glxgears and poor 2D performance. when i have them enabled, i have 800-1200 FPS and good 2D. Looks strange. Also, when kde effects are enabled, i have weird artifacts in NetBeans editor: after scrolling text down and then up - shows another top text line, not that what was before scrolling down. Selecting text by mouse or by keyboard shortcuts(shift+end/home/arrow) forces selection to be rendered again, and after selection is done, you can see that text has changed! funny nvidia driver :) -- kubuntu-users mailing list kubuntu-users@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-users
