Subject: xdmcp broken, KDE3 to KDE4 kdm remote login - msg#00923
List: kubuntu-users
I installed Kubuntu 9.04 a couple weeks ago and, with the except of the
recent kernel update, have applied all the bug fixes and security
updates. Except for the recent kernel update.
Can KDE3 connect to KDE4 using remote login (initiated from the kdm
login screen)?
I seem to have the same problem mentioned here (Sep 12 2008):
xdmcp broken
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-users/2008-September/031451.html
except Jim didn't say he was connecting from KDE3 to KDE4, just that he
couldn't connect after installing Kubuntu and KDE4.
netstat -lu shows xdmcp is listening (udp, port 177), and there's no
firewall between the computers on my LAN.
I'm able to connect with the same computers when I've rebooted into
Slackware (currently running KDE3).
I found the question somewhere else, and the "solution" for that said it
was a bug which could be resolved by replacing (in the hosts file)
127.0.1.1 to the LAN IP address of the server. That didn't work.
In my Xaccess file, I have this line uncommented
* #any host can get a login window
I've also tried it with having this line uncommented at the same time.
#* CHOOSER BROADCAST #any indirect host can get a chooser
In my kdmrc, I have this
[Xdmcp]
Enable=true
Willing=/etc/kde4/kdm/Xwilling
Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.

yes exactly. most of the problems are in the new ways after KDE 4.2.2
for example, when starting with sudo, a problem happens with kdeinit.
the current one is running as $USER and a new one running as root has to
be started, but since using sudo, many of the $USER environment is still
the same, and the communication between the root application and kdeinit
is incorrectly done resulting in the dreaded xmessage stating the error
and which resets X.
so please, use kdesudo.

i tried ebox before, one thing that bugged me is that it doesn't use the
interfaces file for network management. and thus, the "route" command
didn't work properly at all. and i had 2 applications that require
"route" to know the newwork setup properly, route says there's no
gateway when ebox is installed, the apps assumed there's no network and
run in offline mode. one of them could be configured to skip that test,
the other, can't remember what it was, had the command hardcoded in it,
and i am in no state to edit and source file and recompile :P
but in general, ebox has a nice interface, i just wish programs stick
more to defaults and known standards for their settings and stuff.

Kmail wants localhost
Ever since I was forced to do a hot reset, Kmail has been complaining that
it cannot connect to host localhost. I don't have an account for
localhost, so I'm not sure what it's referring to. I do have a localhost
entry in /etc/hosts, but somehow I don't think that's what it's referring
to. I grepped in .kde/share/apps/kmail. Nothing there. Any ideas?
