From your description, it is not completely clear to me what your setup is. I 
think you have two computers, and / from computer A (server) is mounted 
to /server on computer B. It is possible to mount /home from computer A 
to /home on computer B. Then most of your settings and data should be the 
same regardless of which computer you use.
