There's the timeout on the device itself.

That's old. You would be well-advised to upgrade to more recent packages. 
There ought to be at least KDE 3.3 available, and what with KDE 3.4 already 
some months old it might be available too. Unless you're on very constrained 
bandwidth, and upgrade is a good idea.

I don't think you need the udev stuff -- as long as your Pilot is consistently 
getting /dev/ttyUSB0 assigned, you'll be fine.

Anyway, the usual troubleshooting applies: try to use pilot-xfer to get a 
listing of the device to check that communication works at all. Type:

pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB0 -L

but don't hit enter yet. Hit HotSync on the Pilot. Count three. Hit enter.

If that works, then KPilot _ought_ to work out as well.
