It's weird: S/MIME works for me, but I've got the same output from my gpgsm.
However, that's probably as much I know -- try gmane.comp.gnu.gnupg.users
(I use http://gmane.org for reading my lists) which is email list
gnupg-users@xxxxxxxxx (<http://lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-users/> for
more info).
