Subject: Novell comments on the future of KDE in SuSE - msg#00006
To quote Novell's Vice President of R&D:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=84723&cid=7393279
"Yes, we will still support KDE on SuSE. However, we hope to use this
opportunity to provide Linux developers and ISVs with a single stable platform
for desktop application development."
Also see the quote from Miguel, CTO of Novell:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=84723&cid=7393029
If I read this correctly, they intend to phase out KDE support on SuSE, or
make it an option/add-on. I guess some people have to result to sucker
punches when they can't win the fight any other way.
Is there anything we can or should do to respond to this announcement? (Not
on slashdot of course.)

this was unique to the email announcement it seems, and appears correctly on
the web ...

Yes, I believe you are correct. Ximian has a strongest possible
foothold at Novell already and is pretty much lobbying to have KDE
sidelined: the default desktop on SUSE will likely be changed and
developers/ISVs are to be discouraged from targetting the KDE
development platform.
I have written Nat for confirmation of the above.

Do we have any SUSE contacts? Have they made any arrangements at all
with Novell to make sure that KDE is not sidelined in the above
manner? Maybe we can encourage SUSE to exert some pressure from their
end.
As it is, it seems SUSE/KDE has no visible representation at Novell.
Grumble,
Navin.

Hi,
not 100% sure if this is the right place to send bugs to, but surely you'll
know whom to forward it to ;-)

This should be "...KDE as yet."

And here, the first "Packages may be downloaded from" can be deleted.
Otherwise, wonderful announcement! Thanks to whoever wrote it :)
Cheers,
