silly question about screensaver

Hi All,
I tried to avoid that question, because I think it must be something
obvious for the experienced, but I didn't find a solution.
   I use RH 8.0 with KDE 3.0.3 very happily since some weeks. But however, 
there is this small, but disturbing thing with the screensavers :-) .  
Regardless which screensaver I'm activating (and they all work well when
I press the test-button), when it starts after the specified amount of
time, the screen just blanks and stays black all the time instead of
showing the screensaver. What am I missing here ( 2.4.19 on a
IBM Thinkpad T30, and everything else works fine).
