Just a quick guess:

>From what i see in your mail below, you are using the character
set ISO-8859-1. In this character set, the symbol that appears
when you try to get the EUR sign is the "universal currency symbol".
If you use ISO-8859-15 instead, the EUR sign replaces exactly
this universal currency symbol. Again, from memory: In the
control center, in the language settings, there should be
the option for ISO-8859-15. It is labelled something like
"Latin-1 plus EUR symbol". Try this, maybe it helps.
