OK, it looks like divine intervention is forcing me to face that problem
which is why I am in windows right now.
Last night I changed over to kde3.1rc3 instead of the default 3.03 that
comes with Mandrake9. Since than I have the exact same fault and the ppp
daemon dies just after trying to do a dns lookup whether from kmail konq or
anything. Well at least now since it works in MS I know no-one has changed
my ISP password or something and that the fault lies in Mandrake linux
rather than KDE probably something with authorisation although MDk have gone
crazy with Dynamic detection stuff that doesn't work properly.

I'll be in touch as soon as I find the prob.

BTW Was yours a stock Mdk install? You didn't use a newer KDE?
