Summary: Kate needs better keyboard usability
Product: kate
Version: 2.3
Platform: Debian testing
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: general
AssignedTo: kwrite-devel kde org
ReportedBy: michael.goettsche kdemail net

Version: 2.3 (using KDE KDE 3.3.0)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

Kate is a nice editor, but the GUI lacks a good Keyboard support, due to the
usage of standard KDE components like KFileDialog.
Example, open a File:
Ctrl + O, a nice-looking file dialog appears. But what now? I don't want to
move my hand away from the keyboard just for selecting a file. So, I start to
traverse the widgets in the dialog using Tab, it takes me 7 Tabs until the
focus reaches the file list.

The buttons in the selector widget don't seem to be accessible with the
keyboard at all.

In editors like Emacs or vim, it's easier and faster to open a file without
touching the mouse.

It would be nice to have something like a Kate Konsole which has commands like
"open" taking a file name as parameter for the start. Later it could be
extended with tab completion, wild cards and so on.

Thanks
