This is kind of an ugly bottom-up approach, but it seems to be typical for
student projects. I also had the technology first, and then started to
think about an application with fitting requirements.

If you don't want to limit yourself to PIM and groupware applications, you
might find some interesting ideas in Funambol's "SyncML Book". You should
be able to download it from
"http://www.funambol.com/opensource/documentation/documents.html"; (though I
cannot reach that site at the moment!) Have a look at section 2.2 of the
"SyncML Book" for some ideas of new applications which would benefit from
data synchronization (with SyncML and Funambol).

As I said, I'm working on something similar right now. So if you'd like to
discuss other ideas, you're welcome to write me in private.
