setSyncItems()

When is setSyncItems() in SyncSource called?  I developed a vCard  
sync source that connects to a custom back end address book.  I would  
like to take advantage of performance increases, in the back end, if  
I batch up adds and updates.

It looks like setSyncItems (plural) would be the place to do batching  
but in my tests it is never called.  Instead setSyncItem (singular)  
gets called multiple times.  What situations dictate which method is  
called?
