The word: yes, for example in some context outside of authentication.

auth-md5: possibly, for example if the server asks for it. Someone
please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the client authentication
setting only determines which credentials the client uses initially. If
the server asks for the other mode, C++ clients will answer to that
request in the mode selected by the server.
