Choosing A Webhost:
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web. Web hosts are companies that provide space on a server they own for use by their clients as well as providing Internet connectivity, typically in a data center. Web hosts can also provide data center space and connectivity to the Internet for servers they do not own to be located in their data center, called colocation. more...

FW: Question about RMI, TCP/IP KeepAlive, and socket reset except ions...: msg#00007

java.sun.rmi

Subject: FW: Question about RMI, TCP/IP KeepAlive, and socket reset except ions...

We had a (short interval polls on slave server)loaded server at our
installation. The symptom is sporadic broken pipes and connection reset
and has since been resolved after applying said parm. You can give it a
try in your installation.

Why do you think this will help with connection reset or broken pipe
issues due to server or client load?

R.

Try this run time option:
-Dsun.net.inetaddr.ttl=10

Subject: Question about RMI, TCP/IP KeepAlive, and socket reset
exceptions...

So, I am not a network communications pro -- too much to keep up on, but
we intermittently receive Marshalling or Unmarshalling exceptions
usually due to socket resets or broken pipes when we have say a couple
of hundreds clients communicating with our server. Note that we use RMI
SSL Socket Factories.

I understand that connections are unreliable and that I cannot
completely fix this. However, I am wondering what steps I can take
(tuning or otherwise) to help make this a more rare occurrence.

One thing I noticed is that RMI will use TCP KeepAlive if it is
available. I also know that problems with KeepAlive messages "could"
result in unnecessary socket resets. What would happen if in my socket
factory a made #getKeepAlive always return false and #setKeepAlive
always call super.setKeepAlive( false ). Would this help mitigate
seemingly unnecessary reset connection exceptions?

Anything else I should try? Reducing the value of RMI connection
expiration to say 10 seconds so the server is not managing as many
connections? (and hopefully will not choose to reset existing
connections?) Other things I am missing?

Thanks!
