Subject: Re: Siemens S55 hurdles

Actually my lasy posting was a bit harsh.

I retract that statement.

The Siemens SX-1, U10 and U15 absolutely rock and developing for them is a
dream.

However, I stand by my statement that I could not get a thing to work on the
S55. Yes, it has a great form factor but for Java then personally I would
wait for SX or U series. I did try but I got nowhere at all.

If anyone from Siemens wants to help me out then I would be perfectly happy
to look at the S55 again. I tried and tried and got nowhere. The color API
looked pretty close to MIDP 2.0 as well. And yes the form factor is a dream.

As for the Motorola T720 it must be said that although its a great phone it
has some issues that you though the Java TCK would pick up. To be fair it
the same with the Nokias, look at MIDP 2.0 full screen mode on the 6600 or
HTTP on the 7650!

The Java TCK *should* be more stringent, but then its hard to strike the
balance.

Certainly when I here of the "too many negative switch statements" Siemens
bug along with the known "too many static finals" Motorola bug...both on old
handsets I must add...then I am obviously going to think that more time
should be invested in improving the TCK.

Rather than all these bizarre JSRs that seem to be popping up "JSR XXX: I
Can Make MIDP Control Cruise Missiles", how about the most simple one...

"JSR XXX: An improvement to the Java TCK"

This JSR will target an improved set of test suites that can be used on top
of the original TCK for improved reliability. A vendor can then have a TCK
grading, either 1 or 2, depending on whether or not they have run the second
set of tests. The second TCK may be optional but obviously developers will
support a higher graded TCK device.

Any takers?

Incidentally I still have not managed to sign a MIDlet for the 6600 yet. I
have given up as I here that the Motorola V series can do PlatformRequest to
make a phone call and cell broadcast through JSR 120 WITHOUT signed MIDlets.

Nokia I do love you, but in this case I will be developing certain
functionality for Motorolas. As a wise man, who I once argued about shared
RecordStores once said, the market will win out ;-)
