Re: Why MIDP, not PP? (was Re: MIDP 2.0 beta for palmOne devices now availa: msg#00230java.sun.kvm
I think Palm has done an excellent choice here. Aside from incompatible implementations of the MIDP spec by the different vendors (and even on different devices); Why should Palm not take advantage of the existing efforts already put into development of numerous MIDP applications all around the world? Particularly considering that their main competition in the near future most likely will be all the J2ME MIDP enabled Mobile Phones with PDA capabilities. To be competitive, Palm must provide excellent Over the Air connectivity to the Internet. Nothing hinders developers from developing software with full featured PDA support, albeit they would have to be Palm native applications. First once connectivity and a J2ME MIDP implementation that has passed a "J2ME compatibility check" is in place, there will be a competitive advantage for them to providing a "PDA"-profile (and by that time they most likely have to because their competitors, the PDA enabled Mobile Phones, will be equipped with more powerful processors and "disk"). Let's vote for J2ME MIDP support that passes a "J2ME MIDP compatibility check", instead of having, or not, a slightly compatible J2ME and a incompatible, or even Palm only, enhanced "PDA"-profile. Don't misunderstand me here. If Palm provides both a J2ME MIDP and J2ME "PDA"-profile that passes a "J2ME compatibility check", I would be utterly satisfied ;-) These are just my thoughts about this matter. Remember: Users and usability must go first. Best Regards / Rolf Ps Geeks want gadgets, developers want platform independence, users want freedom of choice and with minimal efforts spent on re-learning just to accomplish the same task as they did before on their "old" platform (at least until they can all- ocate time the for (re-)learning).
