Hi,

When you say that the P900 will not allow more than 1 Bluetooth
connection...

Do you mean that the LocalDevice property for maximum connections reports
only 2? Or do you mean that you have tested this and you could get only 2
P900s to connect?

I have a P900. It would seem that the Symbian implementation of the
JSR-82 API wont allow more than one Bluetooth connection a time. This
means that, without some extra hardware that acts as a multiplayer game
server, it will be hard to support more than two active players.

As it happens, our company has developed a wireless access gateway that
works as a Java programmable WiFi and Bluetooth access point. This
device also has the JSR-82 API (no obex yet) which means that it's easy
to write your own game server application in Java.

I was going to develop some kind of instant messaging proxy for
Bluetooth enabled devices like the new phones and PDAs, and I guess it
would be easy to make some kind of piconet extender for multiplayer games.

Hi,

OK first of all why?

Its simple multiplayer gaming will be huge! Look at XBox Live. Its a
given
:-)

Why Bluetooth? Its simple, who wants to build servers and get charged for
data traffic over GPRS?

So I think Bluetooth multiplayer games will be huge. There are plenty of
Symbian ones already available. The racing ones are really good and are
doing really well.

The Nokia 6600 and Sony P900 already support JSR 82. Any Symbian 7.0.S
handset will also be supporting it though, and there are plenty more
in the
pipeline, like the Nokia 7700.

I noticed a posting from someone with a Sony P900, could that person
please
explain to us a bit about what the MIDP 2.0 port is like, in
particular the
Java Bluetooth implementation.

So in 6 months there will be a lot more.

As for 2 players that is incorrect. Bluetooth can actually support up
to 200
passive connections. On actual devices this is limited to the non parked
connection use case, which leaves the figure at 7.

The 6600 does seem to support only 2 players, but there are ways round
this,
and the 7700 may move the figure to 7.

The native games I have seen have only been 2 players and actually work
really well, think fighting and racing. However I know that N-gage dev
teams
are looking at much higher numbers, Red Faction is 4 player and a new WW2
game will be even more.

Personally I think this is a going to be a huge market and I really hope
that we all make some money out of this :-)

Even if we don't make any cash, multiplayer gaming is all about what we
should be doing in J2ME, remember CLDC (one of the C's stands for
CONNECTED). These are mobile phones remember?

Hi Peter,

I decided not to go directly (yet).

We are a mobile games developer and publisher (See www.mobilescope.com)
and yes, we have considered what Bluetooth can do for us..and right now
my answer is: nothing

(Keep in mind, I'm NOT talking about Symbian, just J2ME.. Where we do
our business)

Right now the problem is the lack of devices, so far only the 6600
supports it (as far as I know). Of course this is changing, like one of
the new s40 phones will also support it.

We do have one game where we talked to the external developer about
Bluetooth, they wanted to do it, we said, WAIT and see :)

But one thing that hits me, is what you write "> Are there are any
companies out there looking for Bluetooth multiplayer games?" . For me
multiplayer is more than 2 people playing. But right now the 6600 only
supports 2 players, right ? (I might be very wrong here)...

Another thing, I don't see a business for pure multiplayer games with
Bluetooth for a long time to come. Rather I see games where the
Bluetooth element is a extra feature.. Like Soccer game ;)

Feel free to comment here or direct :)

Best,

Sam Nova
