Mac problem with getDirectory()

On a Macintosh (OSX 10.4.5  Java 1.4.2_09)
getDirectory()
will not let us choose a directory, it always chooses the files in the 
directory.

Our CDs have spaces in the names, so typing the full path directly in 
doesn't work either.

Any suggestions appreciated.  For now the user who asked me about this is 
working on a PC instead, but she'd rather use her Mac notebook.
