According to the user manuals, this is the way the Quantimet 500 is calculating
the Feret diameter. And you are right, you need to search an infinite number of
rotations to make sure that you get the maximum particle dimension. But with a
large number of rotations, you stand a good chance of getting an accurate
estimate.
