A naive approach (may be too naive?) is simply to rotate the particle at given angles and then to use the width of the bounding box around the rotated particule as the Feret diameter at that orientation. In Matrox Imaging library, the default number of rotation angles is 6 (if my memory is correct). I guess that a few tens of rotations would be more accurate... but obviously much slower to calculate. Thus, a trade-off is required.
