Instead of resizing the images, use the virtual stack opener plugin 
from Wayne,
at http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/plugins/ or some variation of it that 
fits your need.

The virtual stack will operate as a normal stack but under the curtains 
it is loading/unloading each image file in a sequence one by one, thus 
avoiding the out of memory problems.
