Subject: .properties file problem on restart

We have had 5 of our customers over the last few months call us up with this problem. On a restart (both a "proper" restart, which causes our app to call "shutdown", and a "crash"), they observe the following:

Our app cannot connect to the database. HSQLDB gives an error about a syntax problem with gibberish characters. Upon inspection of the .properties file, we notice that hsqldb.script_format=0. For our app, it should be =3. If you manually set it to 3 in a text editor, the database will open up fine. Obviously, this isn't very good (our customers are not very tech-savvy).

In one instance, the error was about a "bad zip file format". We couldn't recover that database.

These are windows systems. Any ideas? Any help is appreciated
