agreed, batch file error codes are difficult to get right.  RE the shell 
script, looks like you've left off the cmdline args, unless they come for free 
in some way of which I wasn't aware... also, is the $(echo ...) necessary, and 
if so, wouldn't `echo ...` be more portable?
