Okay, I've created a feature request (#306584) in the forge system, complete with demo app. I don't know much about creating patches, so I don't know if the patch file I included is what you need. If it's not acceptable, let me know. Worst case is that I email you the whole DocumentLoaderImpl.java and you do all the patching.
I'm already using the my patched version of xmlc-base.jar in my project and it's working great. As I understand it, the ball's in your court now. I look forward to the announcement of this feature's inclusion in 2.3.
