right thing: HTML that does not validate the w3.org rules is simply not
compiled.

What I meant by non-well formed HTML was how HTML has traditionally been written, like non-well formed XML:

<img src="foo">
<p>
<b>Some more stuff here.</b>

It'd be nice if I could get away with either closing my <img> tags like well formed XML, or not. I guess I'm asking for the type of parsing most web browsers have nowadays.
