But you have to specifically know the encoding of the database. I'm no specialist of JDBC, so I don't know what are really the issues here

For Postgresql you can specify the charSet with the connection URL.

DatabaseManager.DB.example.Connection.Url = "jdbc:postgresql://192.168.1.1/yourDbName?charSet=iso-8859-1"
