Hi,
I was also a newbie a couple of weeks ago, the thing that really helped 
me were:

1. The Drools documentation
http://labs.jboss.com/file-access/default/members/jbossrules/freezone/docs/3.0.5/html_single/index.html

2. The eclipse plugin. It's really easy to install and creating a "new 
drools project" you will have a running example to play with.
